DNA testing has confirmed that the remains discovered in state forest in Sydney belong to missing man Matthew Leveson.
His father, Mark Leveson, has told the ABC that items discovered at the crime scene had left no doubt that his family’s decade long search for his body had come to an end.
“Things that were found at the crime scene gave the police and us no doubt at all that Matt was there,” Mark Leveson said.
The discover of the missing 20 year-olds’ remains occurred just moments before police were preparing to conclude their search. Authorities have conducted three searches of the area in the last six months.
Leveson last seen leaving Sydney’s Arc nightclub in 2007. Michael Atkins, Leveson’s boyfriend at the time of his disappearance, was acquitted of his murder and manslaughter following a trial in 2009.
Last year an inquest into his presumed death was halted when Atkins allegedly admitted he had lied under oath. He agreed to show police where Leveson’s body was, in return for indemnity for prosecution.
