The arrests were made over the weekend. A hotel in the Lagos state was cordoned off while police investigated the people inside.

In Nigeria homosexuality is punishable by 14 year imprisonment. While anyone caught showing same-sex affection in public, or being member of a LGBT organisation can be jailed for ten years.

Same-sex activities has long been outlawed in the African nation but in 2013 penalties were dramatically increased. Twelve Nigerian states also follow Sharia law, canning men who are believed to be homosexual, Lagos is not one of these regions.

Nigeria is just one of 72 countries where same-sex activity is outlawed.
