The opponents of marriage equality have claimed that the survey on marriage equality is about everything from education programs, to freedom of speech, to fighting political correctness.

We know that the call for equality is simply just recognising the love between two people, and their desire the formalise that commitment before their friends and families.

As we fight for the right to be able to get married to our loved ones, we’re sharing stories of LGBTI couples, and we want you to send us your story, like many couples have already done.

Meet Ashley and Alexia.

Who are you? 

Alexia and Ashley. The photo is from our helicopter flight for my birthday/our engagement.

How did you meet?

We met through a mutual friend. We were both invited out to drinks and that turned out to be the night that changed our lives.

How long have you been a couple?

We have been together for almost three years and engaged for one year.

What’s your favourite thing about each other?

Ashley: My favourite thing about Alexia is how she feels like my home base. No matter where we go or what challenges come our way, I know I can hold her in my arms and feel like everything will be okay.

Alexia: My favourite thing about Ashley is that she is so accepting of everyone, she never judges anyone or their situation. She is always herself and I love that about her.

What has been a big moment in your relationship?

Ashley: Last year, on my 23rd Birthday I managed to convince Lex that for my birthday I really wanted to fly in a helicopter. I organised it and we flew to a sandbar on low tide, south of Broome, Western Australia.

After a lovely picnic at sunset I got down on one knee and asked her to be my wife. Best birthday present ever!

Why do you want to see marriage equality in Australia?

We want to see marriage equality because we are important. Our family matters and we want to raise our children with love and knowing they will always be accepted, no matter who their parents are or who they love. The day marriage equality is achieved, will be one of the happiest days of our lives.

How do you foresee your wedding day?

Our perfect wedding day will be one lovely celebration. We would be joined by our family and friends down south In Margaret River, Western Australia.

We don’t want anything over the top, nothing too fancy, just a very chilled atmosphere. Great music, flowing drinks and a celebration of our love for one another.
