Greens Senator for Western Australia Rachel Siewert is calling on Western Australians to enrol and update their details with the Australian Electoral Commission before the deadline in two days time.
“I cannot urge young West Aussies strongly enough to enrol to vote before the August 24th deadline in the lead up to the postal plebiscite for marriage equality,” Senator Siewert said.
“Before this debacle one in four young people were not enrolled to vote but high numbers of young people are now logging onto the AEC website to make sure their voice is heard.”
Senator Siewert said that while she and her party are hopeful that the upcoming postal survey will be stopped by the upcoming High Court challenge led by fellow Green Janet Rice, West Australians need to be prepared for the vote to go ahead.
“This postal plebiscite has been designed by the opponents of equality with the hope that the older conservative vote will be more inclined to have up to date details and send off their postal vote. We cannot let them win, everyone should be entitled to marry the person they love,” Senator Siewert continued.
“There is limited time to update your details so the time is now to log on and spend a few minutes getting it done”.
Australians can enrol and update their electoral details online on the Australian Electoral Commission website.
