The latest film from Italian director Luca Guadagnino is garnering much attention, with rave reviews and some unexpected controversy with an old Hollywood star.

Call Me By Your Name, based on the 2007 novel by American author André Aciman, follows the story of Elio Perlman (Timothée Chalamet) in 1980s Italy, who meets an academic named Oliver (Armie Hammer). The two young men become close, bonding over their sexuality and Jewish heritage.

The film was recently criticised by veteran actor James Woods, who tweeted that the relationship between the 17 and 24-year-old characters “quietly chips away at the last barriers of decency.”

Armie Hammer was quick to respond to the tweet, pointing out Woods’ past relationship with a much younger woman.

The film has been receiving positive reviews as it makes it’s debut around the globe, with many critics praising the film for depicting gay characters that are not engaged in a struggle for acceptance – or their lives.
