“Sportsbet respects that same-sex marriage is an important social issue,” the company said in a statement.

“In response to recent views received regarding Sportsbet’s same-sex marriage markets, we have decided to withdraw the markets.”

Alex Greenwich, co-chair of Australian Marriage Equality had described the company’s promotion as a “whole new low”.

“To vote on the validity of some Australians’ relationships is bad enough, but to bet on them is a whole new low,” Greenwich said on Wednesday.
