Morgan Freeman is "surprised" we don't have marriage equality

Actor Morgan Freeman says one of the best times he’s ever had in Australia was when he ended up at a gay bar in Sydney, listening to Sister Sledge sing We Are Family.

“It was so much fun and I thought there was this feeling of freedom,” the actor said. “I am surprised Australia doesn’t have marriage equality.”

Freeman shared his thoughts on Australia’s refusal to allow same-sex couples to wed during an interview with News Corp about his new documentary series The Story of Us.

Freeman said that while some young people are still excommunicated by their parents when they come out, many parents are realising that potentially one of their own children could be gay, and in turn are becoming more supportive of issues like marriage equality.

The sequel to the acclaimed The Story of God, which also featured Freeman, sees the actor traveling the world speaking to people about freedom, love, war and peace, rebellion, power and the idea of ‘us and them’.

The 80 year old actor has a few new movies in the works, soon he’ll appear in Just Getting Started alongside Rene Russo and Tommy Lee Jones, followed by Disney’s The Nutcracker and the Four Realms alongside Keira Knightly and Helen Mirren.
