Jennifer Lopez has voiced her support for Arizona’s LGBTIQA+ communities following a deadly shooting in Tucson, Arizona.
“Heartbroken over yet another senseless act of violence against our LGBTQIA+ community. Sending love and strength to everyone in Tucson, and to the loved ones of those we lost. You are seen, you are loved.” Lopez posted to her social media alongside an emoji of the Pride flag.
Authorities in Tucson, Arizona, have said they are looking into a fatal shooting that claimed three lives, including that of the suspected gunman, and are treating the case as a possible hate crime.
Officers responded to reports of a shooting at Venture-In, a leather bar in Tucson. Upon arrival, they discovered three adult men with gunshot injuries. Two of the victims were declared dead at the scene, while a third man, believed to be responsible for the shooting, was taken to hospital in critical condition. He later died from his injuries.
The suspected shooter has been identified as 44-year-old Ousman Ceesay. The two men killed at the scene were named as 42-year-old Vincent Anthony Siqueiros and 33-year-old Cameron Davis Capara.
According to preliminary findings, the incident began in the venue’s car park, where the suspect allegedly approached the victims before opening fire. Investigators believe Ceesay confronted Siqueiros and Capara and then shot both men.
Police also reported that Ceesay was carrying a list of LGBTQIA+ businesses in the local area.
Tucson Police Chief Monica Prieto described crimes driven by bias as particularly disturbing.
“I am deeply saddened that another senseless loss of life has happened in our community. Bias-based crimes are especially heinous and have no place in our community.
“Our investigators are thoroughly examining the evidence and pursuing all available leads as they work to establish the full circumstances surrounding this tragic incident. At this time, we have no indication that there is any further ongoing threat to the public.
“We recognise this incident may cause fear and pain within our community. The Tucson Police Department has dedicated increased police presence around LGBTQIA+ establishments and is coordinating with community organisations to provide support.
“Tucson is, and always has been, a diverse community where people of different backgrounds, identities and experiences call this city home. We are committed to ensuring every member of our community feels safe, valued and welcomed.”
