The World Health Organisation has surprisingly named Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe as a good will ambassador.
Mugabe who has been President of the country since 1987 has a long history of making homophobic comments, including advocating for gay people to be put to death.
The Director General of the World Health Organisation however has defended the decision saying Mugabe has made a “commitment to public health”.
The World Health Organisation leader claimed that under Mugabe’s rule, Zimbabwe has become “a country that places universal health coverage and health promotion at the centre of its policies to provide health care to all”.
In a joint statement dozens of health organisations expressed shock and outrage at the move highighting the African leader’s many human rights abuses.Among the signatories is the World Heart Federation, Action Against Smoking and Cancer Research UK.
