As votes were counted last night two incumbent councilors closely aligned with Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi were way behind in the counting. Long standing councilor Judy McEvoy’s time on the council seems certain to come to an end, while one term councilor Keith Yong was also lagging behind in the poll.

Deputy Mayor James Limnios and fellow incumbent Reece Harley look certain to be returned, alongside newcomers Lexi Barton and Steve Hasluck.

Former journalist Di Bain it seems will just miss out on a spot, and former state politician Michael Sutherland has failed his his bid to return to the City of Perth council.

The council has often been divided on issues with Deputy Mayor James Limnios siding with Cr Reece Harley and Cr Gemma Green, while other councilors have put their support behind Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi. The balance of power looks certain to now tilt the other way.

Around the state other former Liberal MP’s have been successful in their bids to get onto local councils.

In Gosnells former state politician, Peter Abetz looks certain make a return to public life, just months after being voted out of state parliament. Abetz is currently serving as the Western Australian Director of the Coalition for Marriage.

In Joondalup Albert Jacob will be the new mayor, beating former Police Minister Rob Johnson who was also running for the top job.
