George Michael tops the British charts

Ten months after his unexpected death on Christmas Day, George Michael has taken out the top spot on the British album charts.

The singer’s 1990 album Listen Without Prejudice Vol 1 was re-released this week, featuring remastered production and bonus tracks.

The new version of the album includes the singers MTV Unplugged performance and a new remix of the b-side track Fantasy. The song was reworked by Chic member, super producer, Nile Rodgers. A documentary about the making of the album also screened in the UK.

George Michael had been working on the re-release of the album at the time of his passing. Listen Without Prejudice was the singer’s second solo album, after he quit his band Wham! in the mid 80’s.

Whereas the singer’s first solo album Faith was a hugely popular album, with multiple singles, promotional videos and a world tour, for this second record the singer opted for a more low key approach, shunning promotional videos and asking fans to focus on his songwriting, rather than his celebrity.

While Listen Without Prejudice Vol 1 didn’t sell as well as his debut, the record was critically acclaimed. The album included the tunes Freedom 90, Praying for Time, Waiting for That Day and Heal the Pain.

The album is currently number five in the Australian ARIA charts.
