His resignation comes after a military take over, days of protests and the commencement of impeachment processes.

In the nation’s parliament, the Speaker Jacob Mudenda, announced that Mugabae has written a letter announcing his resignation.

In the letter the President said he had not been forced to give up his role and he hoped for a smooth transition of power.

British Prime Minister Theresa May welcomed the news and said it “provides Zimbabwe with an opportunity to forge a new path free of the oppression that characterised his rule”.

Mugabe served as the nation’s Prime Minister from 1980 – 1987, when he took up the role of President. The 93 year old leader has a long history of making anti-LGBTI comments.
