Twenties is an autobiographical comedy that tells the story of a queer black woman named Hattie, who is navigating life in Los Angeles with her straight best friends Nia and Marie.

Waithe is best known for her role as Denise on Netflix’s Master Of None, and is the first black woman to win an Emmy for her writing on the episode Thanksgiving which explores her real life experience of coming out to her family.

“I always wanted to tell a story where a queer black woman was the protagonist,” Waithe said of the show.

“Queer black characters have been the sidekick for long enough. It’s time for us to finally take the lead.”

Waithe is currently executive producer on The Chi, another show of her creation airing on Showtime.

You can watch the pilot presentation of Twenties on YouTube.
