Joel Creasey says gay men need to get over their body image obsession

Comedian Joel Creasey has called on Australia’s gay men to tone down their obsession with body image, and stop body shaming others, ahead of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.

Admitting that his own tour promotional posters are airbrushed to an almost unrecognisable point, the comedian said it’s time everyone calmed down about their diets and gym routines in the lead up to Mardi Gras.

“I’ve seen over the past few months on Instagram and social media gay men discussing their diets and gym regimes in the lead up to Mardi Gras and, particularly, the parade and party – as if they’re training for the Olympics or to compete in Miss Universe.” Creasey posted to Facebook.

“Body shaming in the gay community is getting out of control.” the comedian said before dispensing some thoughts on the issue.

“To make it super clear I’m not attacking anybody who lives a healthy life and rocks a bangin’ bod. If you want to party shirtless or even naked – fucking go for it girlfriend. I’ll happily hold your shit for you.” Creasey said.

“If you want to walk the parade with your kit off in a pair of speedos… hell yeah! I’ll give you a flirty wave.

“All of that is AWESOME.

“I’m talking to those people who think it is a NECESSITY to be ripped, tanned and have 20k plus Instagram followers to be welcome.

The comedian said as we approach the 40th anniversary of the historic first Mardi Gras march it is important to think of those older people who fought for the rights we enjoy and make sure all members of the LGBTI community were included in the celebration.
