Disney fans are excited after one of their film’s directors has hinted at a potential queer romance for a particular princess.

Speaking to the Huffington Post, Frozen co-director Jennifer Lee mentioned that the team behind the sequel are ‘conscientious’ of the fandom’s outcry to give lead character Elsa (Idina Menzel) a girlfriend.

“I love everything people are saying… people are thinking about with our film – that it’s creating dialogue, that Elsa is this wonderful character that speaks to so many people,” Lee said.

“Where we’re going with it, we have tons of conversations about it, and we’re really conscientious about these things.”

The hashtag #GiveElsaAGirlfriend went viral back in 2016, spawning petitions to encourage Disney to act and include LGBTI+ representation in their films. Frozen‘s most popular song, Let It Go, has also been lovingly adopted as a queer coming-out anthem.

LGBTI+ Disney fans may not be disappointed, after the cinema giants included what was described as an ‘exclusively gay moment’ in last year’s reboot of Beauty and the Beast, where Josh Gad’s character LeFou questioned his feelings for Luke Evans’ Gaston.

Frozen 2 is due for release in 2019.
