The actors in three leading roles of The Shawshank Redemption have been announced as the production prepares to storm Australian stages.
Home & Away and Outlander star David Berry will play quiet former banker Andy Dufresne, who has been wrongly sentenced to life in prison for murdering his wife and lover.
Bert LaBonté, known for his roles in The Book of Mormon and Cloudstreet, takes on “Red” Redding, a contraband smuggler who forms a close friendship with Andy.
Finally, one of Australia’s most recognisable actors, Rodger Corser, will transform into the Warden – a religious, powerful prison boss known for his cruelty.
“After 20 years in film and television, I couldn’t resist the opportunity to return to the stage for a story as powerful as The Shawshank Redemption,” Corser said.
“Its themes of hope, resilience and friendship resonate just as strongly today as they did when the film was released more than 30 years ago.”
When the corrupt Warden seeks to exploit Andy’s talents for his own gain, a quiet and daring plan begins to emerge, one that will challenge the very walls of Shawshank Prison itself.
Described as “raw, intimate and deeply moving”, this play brings all of the iconic moments from the film and its source material, Stephen King’s novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption.
