FLIRT FICTION
Ana and Henry are two friends with an intense rivalry. They feed off their ‘ongoing literary duel’ for inspiration. This time, their little friendly competition required each person to craft sensual fiction. As each individual writer explores the language of sex, their respective escapades spiral into unexpected encounters and unearths desires within each of them that neither knew existed. Their journeys becomes challenging as they each revisit their own sexual histories, test their relationships and question their sense of self, pushing them beyond any other challenge they’ve attempted. The play uses physical theatre, classic narratives, contemporary dance and intimate monologues to invoke questions about our own erotic lives.
Flirt Fiction is on at the Blue Room from October 4 to October 22.
AVANT-GARDEN
To show their concern with representations of nature in contemporary art, Daniel Bourke and Clare Wohlnick along with Big Fag Press created Avant-Garden. An irregular journal published by their own printing studio in Sydney, Benchpress, Avant-Garden showcases interviews, essays, articles and projects from ten Australian and international artists. Avant-Garden is being displayed in a custom-designed reading room together with feature images created at artist-run printing collective, Big Fag Press. The Big Fag Press creates traditional lithographic prints, which are extremely rare and unusually large high quality.
Avant-Garden runs from September 24 to November 20 at Fremantle Arts Centre.
ART IS WHAT YOU MAKE IT
‘Art Is What You Make It’ is a collection of works now on display at 399 Bar on William Street. Local artists Caroline Calderbank, Rhiahnon Kennedy, Michael Lombardi, Antonio Papalia and Fieldey contribute to the collection, each bringing their unique style to the table. Calderbank and Kennedy make colourful collages from the heart while newbie Fieldey custom designs almost anything she can get her hands on. Make your way to this swanky bar on the bustling William Street and check out this eclectic exhibition.

WRONG ANGLES
Wrong Angles is a solo show of West Australian artist, Alex Spremberg at PICA. His new work focuses on the distribution of consumer goods and the flow of information through the media. Curated by Leigh Robb, the exhibition shows pieces that have been re-constructed out of cardboard, newspapers and layers and layers of paint. As with Spremberg’s practice over the past 25 years, the work engages with production, standardisation and economic rationalism. The fluidity of paint in this latest series mimics the flow of images and information through newspapers to create provocative images.
Wrong Angles runs from September 2 to October 30 at the Westend Gallery, PICA.
