Season six of Orange is the New Black dropped late on Friday afternoon and saw a major reboot of the show following it’s challenging fifth season.

A new team of writers has come on board and given the show a major revamp, and that has seen the show’s cast pared down and many of the program’s popular characters jettisoned from the series.

Following the riot that took up the whole of the last series the inmates involved in organising the riot have been sent to Maximum Security, while the rest of the prisoners have been moved to other prisons, including one in Cleveland, Ohio.

Queer comedian Lea DeLaria who plays Big Boo appears briefly in just one scene, also seen in the lone scene in Cleveland is skinhead Helen.

Also culled from the cast is Yoga Jones played by Costance Shulman and Chang played by Lori Tan Chinn, plus Flaca has lost her sidekick Maritza. Brook Soso and Muslim prisoner Alison Abdullah have also been nixed.

The missing characters might not be gone forever, the show has brought back former characters before. Relocating the action to Max has allowed a few former characters to reappear including Lori Petty’s character Lolly.

Fans hoping that Ruby Rose’s character Stella might reappear have been disappointed, another inmate mentions that Stella has moved on – but she used to complain about Chapman all the time.

The show’s seventh season is already filming and will be on screens in 2019.

Catch Orange is the New Black on Netflix or Foxtel.
