Arts Shorts – December 2011

ALL THE SINGLE LADIES

Ladies, ready your spray cans! Lady Bananas, one of our states most prolific graffiti artists, has brought together some of the finest female graffiti artists Australia has to offer, including Sear (Melb), Ladie Poise (Per), Ishk (Ade), Joske (Melb), Isis (Ade) and Lady Bananas herself. Ladies Lounge promises to be a massive event, made all that bigger by the fact that all the artists are being flown in for opening night! So be at Queen Street Gallery in Fremantle on December 9 for a mind blowing opening night, although the show runs until December 23.

FROM RUSSIA, WITH LOVE

When the Youth Ballet WA (YBWA) stage Swan Lake this December, there will be an extra special guest in their midst when Natalia Vyskubenko from the Bolshoi Ballet, Russia and partner Yury Vyskubenko appear as special guests. The duo are set to wow, bringing to life the glory and majesty of Tchaikovsky’s music and the incredibly potent story of Odette, the princess cursed by an evil sorcerer. With over 110 local dancers lending their support, YBWA’s Swan Lake promises to be a mesmerising performance. Runs December 17 – 19 at Burswood Theatre, Perth. www.ticketek.com.au.

CRINGE-WORTHY

Last month’s covergirl/boy Tom Penney is currently completing a studio residency at PICA until December 15. People are encouraged to come down and participate in his video work prior to that date by jumping in front of a green screen and complaining about Perth. It’s not so much another beat-up about our city, but a chance for you to have intelligent comment on that which annoys you the most (i.e. complaining about all the complainers). The works will contribute to a variety of projects including Friend World. Oh, and you are encouraged to dress up! www.pica.org.au.

ALL I WANT FOR XMAS

The OnWilliam crew certainly know how to entice you out into Northbridge. As if their badge hunting frenzy wasn’t crazy enough, this Christmas they are releasing limited edition cards featuring the likes of Daek William, Kyle Hughes-Odgers, Cheeks, Bonsai, Gemma Jones, Deathbot, Pippa McManus and Megan Isabella plus others. In total there are 14 to collect from a variety of OnWilliam stores and venues including Tú, The Butcher Shop, The Blue Room Theatre, Gfted Flagship Store, Beans & Bunches, rummage, Outré Gallery and others. Runs until December 24. www.onwilliam.com.au/cards/christmas_cards_map.pdf
