Jim Molan bumped to unwinnable spot on Liberal senate ticket

The political career of Liberal Senator Jim Molan appears to be over, after the party elected him to the third spot on the NSW senate ticket.

Party members elected to put disability advocate Holly Hughes in the first spot, followed by former Acting Party Director Andrew Bragg. Bragg had been promised a spot on the senate ticket after he stepped out of selection for the lower house seat of Wentworth.

Senator Molan was given the third spot on the ticket, but because the Liberals and Nationals run a joint ticket in NSW, he will appear fourth – an unwinnable spot.

Molan was elected to parliament after the Nationals Deputy Leader Fiona Nash was deemed ineligible to sit in the parliament because she had dual citizenship. He moved into politics after a long career in the armed forces where he gained the rank of Major General.

The politician has cancelled an appearance on Monday night’s edition of the ABC’s Q&A Senator Molan told the broadcaster that he could no longer defend the government’s policies.

Senator Molan has described himself as being right-wing when it comes to political views but he voted in favour of marriage equality and supports Australia becoming a republic.
