Fiji's Prime Minister reasserts opposition to marriage equality

Fiji’s Prime Minister has recommitted that there will be no same-sex marriage in the island nation while his party holds government.

FBC News reported that PM Voreqe Bainimarama spoke out against marriage equality in response to chatter on social media that churches were considering their support.

Bainimarama said that Fiji is a God-fearing country and that same-sex marriage will never happen while his FijiFirst party is in power.

The Prime Minister made similar comments in 2016, saying that “Fiji does not need that rubbish.”

Bainimarama said that same-sex couples who want to marry “should go and have it done in Iceland and stay and live there.”
