Perth Roller Derby is taking off to the happiest place on earth – Helsinki, Finland – for the WFTDA European Continental Cup on October 5-6.

Established in Perth, Western Australia way back in 2008, PRD has been growing and getting stronger ever since.

It has been a league goal to travel internationally to compete and that was achieved for the first time in 2018 when PRD’s A travel team – the West Coast Evils – travelled to Denver, Colorado for a US tournament.
Following the trip the team received an invite to the 2018 Continental Cup but were forced to decline due to timing and a lack of funds.

So this year they set their sights on getting an invite to the 2019 Cup and accepting it. They achieved this and will compete in the tournament against some of the best teams in Europe.

Evils captain Minnie Thorson says “Perth may be one of the most isolated cities in the world but we won’t let that stop us!

All of our members put in countless hours of training and volunteering to help self fund our trips across Australia and now overseas. We are excited to have the opportunity to represent our league and our State on an international stage”

The league has set up a GoFundMe to help fundraise for the team.

Roller derby is a full contact sport played on roller skates. It began its modern revival in the early 2000s in Texas, as an all female, woman organized amateur sport. It has spread to many countries and is believed to be the fastest growing sport.

Perth Roller Derby is the original WA league and is currently ranked 6th in Australia and 60th in the world.
