Billy Porter makes history with Emmy win for 'Pose'

Actor Billy Porter has had a historic win at the Emmy Awards, picking up the Best Actor in a Drama trophy.

Porter is the first gay man, who has publicly shared his sexuality, to win the Best Actor in a Drama Emmy. Porter was acknowledged for his portrayal of HIV+ community leader Pray Tell is the series Pose. 

“The category is love, you all. Love. I am so overwhelmed and I am so overjoyed to have lived long enough to see this day,” said Porter, 50, while accepting the award.

The final series of Game of Thrones was the night’s big winner taking home the Best Drama series award. The show was nominated for a whopping 32 awards. Actor Peter Dinklage won the Best Supporting Actor in a Drama for his role as Tyrion Lannister.

Phoebe Waller Bridge was named Best Actress is a Comedy for her show Fleabag, beating multiple category winner Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and last year’s recipient Rachel Brosnahan. The show was also a winner as Best Comedy Series.

RuPaul’s Drag Race won the Best Reality or Competition series category.

Michelle Williams was acknowledge for her portrayal of stage legend Gwen Verdon in the mini-series Verdon/Fosse, while English actor Ben Whishaw was the Best Supporting Actor is a mini-series for his work on A Very English Scandal. Jodie Comer was named the Best Actress is a Drama Series for her role on Killing Eve.
