Bring on the Rapture

Funk/punk rock outfit, the Rapture was the first act announced this year for the anticipated Future Music Festival 2012.

The Rapture is much like an audio chimera – just like the mythical beast is made up by different parts of animals, the New York band draws on several genres such as electronica, post-punk and indie rock, to create its distinctive sound. 2011 has been a big year for the trio with the release of their fourth album, In the Grace of Your Love, – five years since their last record.

Keyboard/saxophonist Gabriel Andruzzi shared with OUTinPerth why it took the band five years to release their fourth album.

‘Some of us were always working on a record; some of us were sorting through our lives,’ Andruzzi said.

‘From getting off course, it took us maybe a year or a year-and-a-half for two people to quit, one person to come back and one of them to leave for good before we were able to really sit down and make a record.’

The Rapture- “Pieces of the People We Love”

After touring for a year and a half on their 2006 album, Pieces of People We Love, the band began working on In the Grace of Your Love.
‘I’ve been happy with it since day one,’ Andruzzi said.

‘We were totally free and were able to do whatever we wanted to do and it was kind of, it felt really liberating to me.’

If you’ve ever listened to The Rapture, you will know just how infectious their music is. Even the band themselves are not immune to their sound. Quite often, the trio’s live performances have them bouncing across their stage to their own beat.

‘I couldn’t get on stage and not be excited about what I do and since I was seriously, a little kid, you know I danced around to music,’

‘If I started getting on stage and every night, I couldn’t do it, I didn’t want to dance around then it would be time to stop.’

On touring, Andruzzi only had kind words for Australia and said the band was excited to return for the country’s music festival season.

‘…Doing these multiple city touring festivals is always, it’s fun for the bands because you’re around other bands,’ he said.

‘It’s sort of like this weird band camp.’

The Rapture is playing at Future Music Festival on March 4 at Joondalup Arena.
