Jake told OUTinPerth that he likes to play a wide variety of music at his shows at Chapels.

“I’m going to be performing a mix of jazz, swing and blues, as well as contemporary songs and requests.” Jake said.

The singer said he leaves the decision about what music will be performed right up to the last minute and takes his cues from the audience.

‘I try to mix it up by playing a range of tunes, so if the audience is a little bit older I’ll play some of the older tunes and if the room’s a little bit younger then we’ll play more more contemporary stuff.”

Growing up Jake had an eclectic taste in music, listing his heroes as singers from many different decades.

“Growing up I loved people like Nat King Cole, Ray Charles and Whitney Houston. Nowadays I really like Bruno Mars, Sam Smith and Drake.” Jake said.

Aside from his regular gig at Chapels on Whatley on the third Saturday night of each month, Jake’s also got a lot of performances lined up for 2017.

“I’m going to be playing a series of shows at The Ellington in Match, April and May.  Each is with a different guest artist and each will be a different show, I thought it would be fun to work with a different artists from Perth.

“The first will be Kings of Swing which will be about your classic crooners like Michael Buble, Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra, the second will be Nat King Cole and Natalie Cole. The third one will be hip-hop, looking at people like Rhianna, Bruno Mars, Drake and The Weekend.” Jake explained. “I really like the two styles of music.”

Jake told us how much he loves playing at Chapels on Whatley, highlighting the mix of great Asian fusion cuisine, a room filled with art on the walls and great music. What more could you wish for on a Saturday night.

Catch Jake Dennis tonight when he plays at Chapels on Whatley at 196 Whatley Crescent in Maylands.
