Janet Jackson’s video which was launched last month, shows the cultural diversity of the world in a celebration of dance and when Sydney artist and self-confessed Janet fan Ramos Jakob saw the clip for the first time, he contacted choreographer Melanie Louise and together they hatched a plan to create a new version that celebrates Australia’s own cultural diversity.

Putting out the call on social media, the pair attracted over 100 volunteers from across Sydney to recreate the video with Indigenous, Asian, Indian, European, South American and many more of the cultures that make up Australia’s unique fabric participating in the community-based project.

“We saw Janet celebrating diversity through dance and were drawn to our own culture here in Australia and thought we’d send her a message from downunder” Ramos Jakob said.

With a week to recruit, the word spread like wildfire across Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, with a week of solid rehearsals for volunteers to learn the routines. From street dancers to classically trained, from young and old, Sydney came together to participate with just two weeks to plan, rehearse and shoot.

“The support from the community was overwhelming and we’re so proud of the results,” Jakob said. “It really proves what the community is capable of when we come together to make a statement. Our strength is in our diversity and we want to show that regardless of our backgrounds, dance and music bring us together to speak with one voice.”

Janet Jackson has welcomed the Aussie made video and told fans she hopes to be back down under soon.

“I am so excited to see the community embrace the message of Made for Now and I want to send a big thank-you to all my Sydney fans for participating in such a wonderful project,” Jackson said. “Dance and music make all of our lives richer and Australia is an amazing example of diversity making a community strong. I look forward to getting down to Australia to see everyone soon!”.

Janet Jackson last toured Australian in 2011 playing a show at the Burswood Theatre. Check out the clip below.
