Western Australians are likely to return to the polls within weeks after The High Court declared the outcomes of last year’s WA senate election void.
High Court Justice Kenneth Payne, sitting as the Court of Disputed Returns, agreed with the Australian Electoral Commissions proposal to void the election outcome after 1370 ballot papers could not be located for a recount.
An additional hearing will be held on Thursday but with the decision to set aside the results of the first poll, a fresh election would appear to be the only option left.
It would be the first time a senate election for just one state would be held in Australia’s history. A new poll is expected to cost $13million.
