Equal Love will protest against religious discrimination laws

Equal Love, the local advocacy group who campaigned for marriage equality for over a decade, will stage a new political rally in the Perth CBD on Saturday as concern grows about the government’s proposed religious freedom laws.

Following in the footsteps of recent rallies in Brisbane and Sydney, the group will stage a rally in the Murray Street Mall from 12pm to 3pm on Saturday.

Organisers say “the Liberal government wants to further entrench and broaden discrimination in a so-called “Religious Freedoms” bill.” and urge members of the LGBTIQ+ communities to join the rally on Saturday. Equal Love have also raised concern about Labor party MPs who have voiced support for a religious discrimination bill.

On Thursday Labor’s Shadow Attorney General, Mark Dreyfus, called on the government to conduct more consultation with Australians before introducing the bill to parliament.

The proposed legislation was passed by cabinet earlier this week and Attorney General Christian Porter has indicated that he will introduce it into the parliament shortly. The legislation has been shown to religious and family groups but LGBTI organisations have not been consulted, many fear the legislation will see LGBTIQ+ rights wound back.

More information about the rally can be found on Facebook
