Featured Creatures August

  • Names: Luke & Lindy
  • Creatures: Rottweiler-Kelpie cross and Dingo Kelpie cross
  • Motto: Love is All Around You (but especially online and at the vet’s)

Former Democrats Senator Brian Greig and partner Keith McKenzie suffered the loss of their beloved Lucy the Kelpie on Melbourne Cup Day last year. Lucy, who even got a mention in Senate Hansard, lost a battle with cancer after living to 11 years of age.

After a period of mourning the couple sought a new companion. Proving that hot, lonely men are not the only thing a man can find on the web, Brian and Keith found puppy Luke, a Rotty/Kelpie cross, online at a dog refuge in Kalgoorlie. Poor Luke had been dumped with his sister, who died shortly afterwards of alcohol poisoning (the mind boggles).

Luke was flown to Perth for his new home with the boys, but life and love really blossomed for him a month later when he was taken to the vets to be sterilized and met Lindy. Lindy, a Dingo/Kelpie cross, also needed a home. The dogs got on so well together Keith couldn’t resist.

‘He went to the vet’s with one dog and came home with two,’ laments Brian jokingly.

Luke and Lindy now enjoy life in Bayswater, walking along the river, running wild at Whiteman Park on weekends, barking at the trains and destroying Brian’s garden.

‘I’d forgotten what it’s like to have children,’ Brian groans.
