Filling Out the Forms

Perth born sculptor James Angus not only redefines the world we live in, but recreates it on a larger than life scale, usually one inherent with humour, audacity and playfulness. At one moment he will have a fluorescent yellow rhinoceros ambling happily along a wall, seemingly defying gravity as it trudges horizontally along. In yet another space, a life sized 1920’s Type B Bugatti racing car lies on its side, visually distorted yet instantly familiar. Angus’ work is currently on display at The Art Gallery of Western Australia in an exhibition entitled Form, which examines the last decade of work from this ingenious visual larrikin. The works featured distort, beguile, and transform in undulating permutations of the architecturally familiar and biologically based, creating a landscape where the everyday becomes a lot less ordinary. Form runs until March 2. www.artgallery.wa.gov.au
