Film: Careless Love

Directed by John Duigan (MA).   Vietnamese Australian Linh (Nammi Le) is studying law at university. She is quiet, studious and respectful to her parents, even sending money home when her father loses his employment to help pay the family’s mortgage. However, when she tells her housemates that she is going to the library to study, she is actually working as a high-end call girl. At the beginning of the film, Linh is able to keep her two lives separate but when an American art dealer (Peter O’Brien) books her privately on a regular basis and a fellow student (Andrew Hazzard) pursues her romantically, she is forced to confront complicated emotions and emotional complications. The film provokes interesting discussions on prostitution, especially when Linh’s friend Mint (Ivy Mak) is seen collecting some of the more unfortunate consequences of the profession. Fantastic performances from newcomer Nammi Le and veteran Peter O’Brien are the highlights of this film.
