Finally a remix of Madonna’s ‘Danceteria’ arrives

Madonna has shared a remix of her hit song Danceteria, with Harry Romero giving the popular track a dancefloor makeover.

The name-checking song has become a fan favourite from Madonna’s Confessions II album and is one of six tracks featured in her video promotion for the album. Some fans have expressed hope that a full version of the video may be released in the future.

In an Instagram post, DJ Harry Romero shared how honoured he was to be asked to remix the track.

“Being asked to remix Madonna’s latest single Danceteria off her new album is a career high. Growing up in the 80s, I never ever thought I would, one way or another, be creatively involved with such a pop icon. She, along with Michael Jackson and Prince, has been the soundtrack to my youth and the youth of so many.”

Romero also shared that the opportunity to collaborate with Madonna arose after he created his own bootleg remix of another of her songs.

“About a year or so ago I made a bootleg of one of her very early singles, Physical Attraction. I made this simply to play in my DJ sets.”

He shared the bootleg mix with a few close DJ friends, including Honey Dijon. When she played it at Madonna’s London listening party, the superstar reportedly asked where the new version of her classic tune had come from. A week later, Madonna asked him to work his magic on Danceteria.

The song is named after the New York club that Madonna frequented in the early 1980s, where she got her big break by getting a tape of her music to DJ Mark Kamins. He played her demo at the club and later helped her secure her first recording contract with Sire Records. Kamins also produced her debut single, “Everybody”, which was released in 1982.

The album version of the song references influential and memorable people in Madonna’s circle of friends, as well as others who frequented the club during that era. Artists Martin Burgoyne, Keith Haring and Kenny Scharf are mentioned, along with longtime friend Debbie Mazar and Kamins.

Romero’s remix, however, removes the verses and focuses primarily on the song’s highly danceable chorus.
