OPINION

Rumours surfaced earlier today that federal opposition leader Tony Abbott was set to reverse his view on same sex marriage on this Sunday’s edition of the Channel Nine program ’60 Minutes’. A story at ‘City News’ claimed a ‘well placed source’ had confirmed the story.

The rumours however were just that, with the Executive Producer from the show quickly pouring cold water on the story. What is known is that this Sunday’s edition of the show will feature interviews with both Mr Abbott and his openly gay sister, Sydney City Councillor Christine Forster.

While Mr Abbott is not changing his stance on same sex marriages, is he going to change his position on a conscience vote for other member’s of the Liberal Party?

Rodney Croome from Australian Marriage Equality says if Mr Abbott was to allow a conscience for Liberal members it would be a momentous day for marriage equality supporters.

Although the vote on this issue in parliament last year was defeated, it is acknowledged that they Liberal party’s stance that all members vote along party lines in out of step with the party’s values.

Furthermore the introduction of same sex marriage in Britain has only increased pressure on the Australian conservatives to follow to suit. Speaking to AAP last month, long standing British gay rights campaigner Peter Tatchell said he hoped that change in Britain would lead to more change in Australia, noting that, “Discrimination is not an Australian value.”

Is there a political advantage for Tony Abbott if he were to change his stance? Possibly, it may make him look more like he’s a consultative politician willing to respect the views of his colleagues including those which he disagrees with.

It may also allow him to ‘have his cake and eat it too.’ Allowing Liberal party members to support same marriage, and keeping them happy – while maintaining his personal beliefs and the support of conservative backers.

’60 Minutes’ airs 7:30pm Sunday on the Nine and WIN networks.
