Kylie in the Absolute

Imagine copying wonderful works of art, ones that require immense skills. Now consider the difficulty in trying to copy a major recording star and stage legend and yet be so skilled that the performer is able to trick both your eye and the ear.

First thoughts immediately turned to Michelangelo when his eyes first saw that massive piece of marble. He spent years chiselling and the end result was the sculpture art treasure, David. Even with today’s modern techniques, it would be near impossible to copy.

So with Michelangelo’s David masterpiece clearly etched in his mind, OUTinPerth’s Terry Larder approached the wonderful Sarah Harmony (aka Absolute Kylie) and her husband Michael, to delve into the art of copying the almost inimitable – none other than Ms Kylie Minogue.

Similarities between the copy (Absolute Kylie) and the real Kylie are quite a head spin until you delve into the figures. Harmony’s wrist, waist, height, eye colour and shoe size are all the same as Kylie’s.

Harmony was born in Nottingham, UK and immigrated to Australia with her family when she was four years old. Kylie, on the other hand, was born in Australia and now lives in the UK.

Harmony met her husband Michael at a nursing class – she under Scorpio and he under Pisces – so the match was made! Michael works as a mental health nurse and also has a passion for shaping wind surfing boards, something he now also earns a living from. He is also Harmony’s manager, roadie, and as such, deals with agents and helps with the finishing touches to some of Harmony’s many stage costumes.

‘My first singing job was on the Mulberry Farm ferry boat,’ Harmony said. ‘From there I branched out singing in various bands and I also had a permanent gig at the piano bar at the Burswood. A suggestion to sing Kylie songs kick-started the whole Kylie copy thing, and since then I have traded-in my previous nursing job and now do this full-time.’

Recently seen on TV’s Australia’s Got Talent, Harmony was given a ‘YES’ in front of someone who knows Kylie very well – her sister, Dannii Minogue! She gave Harmony praise in both departments: her look as well as her performance.

Harmony advanced through to the next round after Danni commented, ‘I have seen a lot of people impersonate my sister around the world, though mainly drag queens… you look very similar to her, the costumes are fantastic….you’re a good showgirl, definitely. You put on a good show!’

The closest Harmony has been to Kylie (apart from seeing Ms Minogue in concert last year), was standing next to the Kylie wax copy at Madam Toussard’s in London. The one wish Harmony would like to see for filled is to one day meet her idol, the real Kylie Minogue.
