It’s fair to say Lizzo’s career has gone a bit of the rails lately.
Lizzo’s career got off to a slow start, but her third album saw her break through with Good As Hell. Follow up record Cuz I Love You was enormous with Truth Hurts, Boys, Juice and the title track. Then came Special with About Damn Time and 2 Be Loved.
After a string of huge hits in 2025 she put out Love in Real Life which at the time was reported to be title song from her next album, but it flopped badly, and follow up Still Bad also fell flat. She also put out a ‘mixtape’ album My Face Hurts From Smiling that featured a whopping 24 tunes.
Now it seems Lizzo has abandoned the album she planned and come up with a new record, Bitch. The title track has Lizzo delivering a smooth flow, but the chorus is something that harks back to the 1990s.
Pop trainspotters will recognise the chorus as being lifted form Meredith Brooks 1997 hit of the same name. Lizzo has taken the rock jam and transformed into a smooth RnB sound.
Meredith Brooks’ song went to number 2 on the Australian charts in 1997 and was a favourite on TripleJ. While Brooks’ career saw her release seven albums of material, Bitch remained her only hit.
She was also part of the girl band The Graces alongside Gia Ciambotti and former member of The Go-Gos Charlotte Caffey.
This is not the first time Bitch has been repurposed, Bebe Rexha also used elements of the track in her I’m a Mess. While back in 1990s Australian comedian Chris Franklin used the track for his parody tune Bloke.
Lizzo’s new album will arrive on June 5th.
