Love Is My Velocity Release Party

Staying true to the label’s ethos of truffling out only the very best and most exciting new bands in the Perth independent music scene, Love Is My Velocity! release their fourth split 7” single, featuring the debut recordings of two of the most hotly hyped and eagerly anticipated bands in WA right now – Sugar Army and 7 Day Weekend.

This limited edition single features two finger popping A-sides: Sugar Army’s planet-bestriding, snaked hipped, future classic “I Got Your Soul” (a stone cold statement of intent if ever there was one) and, for a radical departure on the flipside, the low-slung, post- electro love song stylings of 7 Day Weekend with their slinky paean to the peaks and pitfalls of real estate, “Hot Property”, destined to take up residence in the unsuspecting minds of impressionable young listeners all over the world. To kick things off in appropriately spectacular fashion, we are throwing a huge launch party on Friday, 15 June at Perth Town Hall.

7 Day Weekend are self-proclaimed ‘art school rats and brats’ who took root in an unusual way – germinating first as a project for an experimental drawing class, before eventually growing into a fully formed, firmly tongue-in-cheek, ever so slightly off kilter electro girl group, singing drolly catchy, fluoro pop songs about boys, pizza, parties and leisure wear. Along the way, they thrilled audiences with their onstage antics (such as miming playing their instruments and dressing up as pirates and Pierrot clowns) and played with bands of the moment like Van She, Presets, Kiosk and Cut Copy.

Sugar Army formed in a much more conventional manner, but are no less extraordinary for it. As if by magic, their combination of explosive post-post punk, rock and roll good looks, sheer unfettered talent and charisma to burn hit the sweet spot (no pun intended) in the music scene, and as a result, their rise in the local ranks has been a dizzying and meteoric one, propelling them from blushing newcomer status to racking up supports with bands like Temper Trap, Wolf & Cub, Gerling, Starky, and even a slot at the 2007 Big Day Out in the blink of an eye.

2007 has also proven to be a big year for Love Is My Velocity! so far, with the April release of the third single, featuring Josh Fontaine and Joe Bludge, garnering media accolades and considerable airplay across the country, followed by the launch in May of the hotly buzzed about Love Is My Velocity Cookbook, an exciting, innovative venture combining the best of WA’s young bands, young artists, and, of course, food. The fourth single will be followed by our very first tentative steps into the release of full length albums, the very first being the debut record by manic Japanese punk rockers Bamodi in August, as well as mooted collaborations with eastern states artists later this year.

THE RELEASE:

  • Perth Town Hall, corner of Hay and Barrack St.
  • Friday 15 June 8.00pm to late
