NAIDOC Week

There’s plenty on in recognition of NAIDOC Week July 8-14. NAIDOC, which originally stood for ‘National Aborigines and Islander Day Observance Committee’, has become the name used for the annual Australia-wide, week-long celebration of the culture, achievements and history of Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander people. You can find a list of some of the Perth events online.

Queers4Reconciliation’s contribution to the event is Winyarn Wingding, a poorfella’s alternative to the official NAIDOC Ball at the Hyatt. The event is co-sponsored by Q4R and is supported by WACOSS, Senator Rachel Siewert, Louise Pratt MLC, and a range of community organisations. Winyarn means not feeling brilliant and Wingding means bl**dy good party, and given Q4R’s reputation for throwing great events, the emphasis is on the latter! Winyarn Wingding starts at City Farm at 7pm on July 14.

If you’re looking to learn more about Aboriginal history and culture, Q4R has one of its Cultural Awareness Workshops on July 5. For more information on Q4R events, contact Jim Morrison on 0408 917 133 or Alan Carter on 0428 250 155.
