After 27 years of delivering the news on SBS, Anton Enus has signed off for the final time as he prepares to enjoy retirement.
Following a montage of highlights from his long broadcasting career, the veteran newsreader bid farewell to viewers on Friday night.
“All that’s left is for me to say a huge thank you,” Enus said, before joking about the many different hairstyles featured in the clips.
The South African-born presenter spent 15 years working in television in his homeland before moving to Australia. In the 1990s, he was outed by a newspaper, but the revelation of his sexuality did not impact his career. He has been with his partner, Roger Henning, since 1989, and the couple married in 2019 as they celebrated their 30th anniversary.
Enus joined SBS World News in 1999 and took up the role of presenter of the Late Edition in 2004. In 2007, he became the network’s main news presenter following the departure of Mary Kostakidis and Stan Grant.
In 2017, Enus was successfully treated for early-stage bowel cancer and has since encouraged more people to get tested for the disease.
As he signed off, Enus said he hoped viewers would continue to turn to SBS for reliable journalism.
“At a time of manufactured distrust and wilful misinformation, I hope you’ll continue to watch SBS as a source of reliable news. I know I will.” he said, farewelling loyal viewers.
