No Shrinking Violet

She’s been writing songs for as long as she can remember but she hasn’t always been a performer. Strangely enough, Lanie Lane used to be a florist.

‘I’ve been doing floristry for about four years, I had to start playing gigs and keep up with the floristry in the day and get to work at night,’ recalled Lane.

Lane finally got her break when Ivy League signed her in May this year and she has been touring ever since.

Lane’s music can be pretty much described as a large dose of early rock-n-roll, skiffle, blues and Australian soul, encompassed in interesting tales of love, lust and heartbreak.

‘I would say it’s a bit of a mix of styles from an older era but in the modern day,’ said Lane.

Apart from her sultry vocals, Lane definitely turns heads with her killer wardrobe. As with her music, her fashion influences are spread over many different eras.

‘It’s kind of a mixture of vintage and new pieces that are mixed together with a bit of rustic style running through it. I just make an effort really; I like to style my own shoots.

‘I love mixing stuff together; there are just so many amazing women that wore beautiful clothes throughout the years,’ laughed Lane.

‘I’m always very hands on with it and I just try and have fun.’

Lane also has a rather unique recording process to this day and age; she never does re-takes.

‘I think my recording process is basically just the way people used to record when they had to make a record on a tape and you don’t have 96 channels to record and endlessly edit over and do many re-takes,’ explained Lane.

‘That’s the way I like to do it because I feel like it captures the energy a lot better.’

Her debut album ‘To The Horses’ is about being able to explore life and all its possibilities.

Horses are a representation of a free and fierce spirit, said Lane.

‘It’s about having a great passion for the things I do in my life and surrounding myself with like-minded souls,’ she said.

Lanie Lane’s album To The Horses is out October 14 through Ivy League, catch Lanie playing at The Bird October 22 and at Mojo’s in Fremantle on October 23.
