Perth to light up in solidarity with people experiencing homelessness and mental health challenges

Yagan Square and landmarks across the CBD will shine bright to mark Mental Health Week (4-11 October), as part of St Bart’s Light The Way.

The central hub will transform into a celebration of community, with music and light to entertain and delight while supporting some of our state’s most vulnerable people.

The free community event in Yagan Square will feature a bright Tunnel of Light, live community choir performances, giant light-up games and a warm soup supper, alongside opportunity to learn more about St Bart’s work in supporting housing insecurity.

St Bart’s CEO Samantha Drury said the event offers an opportunity for the community to come together, learn, connect and show support.

“Homelessness is rising, and it is rarely a choice,” Drury said.

“Light the Way is about bringing people together to better understand the challenges many Western Australians face while celebrating the resilience, strength and hope that exist within every person.

“We want people to come down to Yagan Square, enjoy a unique community experience, and help us shine a light on pathways to safe housing, mental health recovery and belonging.”

The event highlights the important connection between homelessness and wellbeing, while reminding people that hope can be found even in the most difficult circumstances.

St Bart’s Mental Health Services Manager, Anita said support and connection can be transformative.

“Every person’s mental health recovery journey is different, and sometimes when we meet with residents, we can see a light in them that they’re yet to recognise in themselves. Our role is to walk beside them to help them find their way.”

More than 20 Perth landmarks will also light up across the city, in a visible display of solidarity with those who need support.

Light The Way comes to Yagan Square on Friday 2 October. For more, head to stbarts.org.au
