Barn Dance has become one of the LGBTIQA+ communities biggest nights, but what many people don’t realise is there’s a whole other party that goes down at City Farm before the big night.
Around 200 people gathered at Perth City Farm on Saturday for the Rainbow Families Barn Dance for Kids, filling the venue with music, dancing and plenty of country inspired fun.
Presented by Rainbow Families in partnership with Vic Park Pride, the event brought together LGBTQIA+ parents, carers and their children from across Perth for an afternoon of connection and celebration.
Children and their families took part in line dancing, games and face painting, while prizes were awarded for the best outfits. There were also entertainers, raffles, giveaways and hot dogs for the hungry young dancers.
Special guest Deputy Lord Mayor of the City of Perth David Goncalves said it was a privilege to join the celebration.
“It was wonderful to see so many rainbow families coming together for such a joyful occasion,” Goncalves said.
“Events like this help create a Perth where every family feels welcome, visible and supported, and where children can grow up knowing that their family belongs.”
Volunteer Diana Matthews said the event provided families with a welcoming environment where they could relax, meet others and enjoy time together.
“It was such a wonderfully wholesome event, and it was a joy seeing so many families connect and the children have fun,” Matthews said.
“There was such a warm and welcoming feeling throughout the afternoon. These events give our families a space where they can simply be themselves and feel part of a strong and supportive community.”
The attendance reflects the continued growth of Rainbow Families in WA and increasing community support for greater visibility and inclusion of diverse families.
For some families, particularly those who are new to parenting or have not previously connected with other LGBTQIA+ parents, events such as the Barn Dance can provide an important first opportunity to meet people with shared experiences.
Rainbow Families works throughout the year to connect and support LGBTQIA+ parents, carers and children through community events, playgroups, peer connection, advocacy and family resources.
The success of the Barn Dance for Kids demonstrates the difference that safe and welcoming community spaces can make, giving children the opportunity to see families like their own while building friendships and a stronger sense of belonging.
Rainbow Families next event is their SOR Playgroup on Saturday 5th September from 9.30am to 11.30am at Jelly Tots in Mundijong.
