Duck Pond is playing at the State Theatre, and it’s an acrobatic performance that crosses the worlds of Swan Lake and The Ugly Duckling.
The stage features a simple but striking backdrop, and the space is quickly filled with an ever‑changing assortment of characters: the Fairy Swan Mother, the Prince, the Black Swan, the White Swan and the Ugly Duckling, plus a whole heap of other feathered friends.
This production tells its story through acrobatics, comedy and circus skills, and we’re soon clapping in amazement at a range of feats — balancing, flipping, flying, spinning and sliding. Incorporated into the work are silks, hula hoops and a host of other circus fare.

With circus shows there’s an expectation of applause after each feat of extreme skill – and they are impressive – but golly, it’s a lot of clapping.
The story has a pleasant and unexpected ending, but the most engaging part of this production happens after you think it’s all over. It keeps going, and it’s engrossing because we don’t know where we’re heading or what is about to happen.
The Brisbane‑based company has toured the world, visiting more than 45 countries, and they’re a very talented bunch.
Duck Pond is at the State Theatre Centre until 18 April. Tickets are on sale now.
The company will then head to Geraldton for a show at the Queens Park Theatre on 22 April, before visiting Kalgoorlie on April 24 for a show at the Goldfields Art Centre.
