SceneOUT #93

Oh my god – tragic gossip alert! Guess which drag queen got caught with her pants down in a local park?! Seems she was having so much fun that when the boys in blue rocked up, they couldn’t keep a straight face. And respectfully so – seems the old clapper had been out all night so her face was only just hanging on by a thread. Wasn’t the only thing hanging on to her either. Needless to say her – and her hanger on – spent the morning getting better acquainted in lock-up. See… it does have a happy ending!

For everyone who is jamming up the switchboard at The Court Hotel let me put your questions to rest: The Gay Prom was such a huge darn success that it will be happening again next year. Congratulations to The Tin Man and Scarecrow (although a tie and collar wouldn’t have hurt lads) and the equally stunning pink taffeta and partner, who all took out the royalty titles such an event bestows. I must admit, I love a bit of pink taffeta. There’s nothing like the high school horror of a prom dress on the loose!

Ooooh, get your WAMi on! The West Australian Music Industry (WAMi) are holding their annual festival this May and it seems it’s bigger and brighter and tighter and lighter than ever before. Not only do they have a whole smorgasbord of things happening over in the party precinct (see this issue’s Art Shorts for a taste of all that’s happening, otherwise hit up www.wam.asn.au for full listings) but they are also dropping by The Court Hotel for a huge event. Yes, mark Saturday May 9 down in your calendar because the day kicks off (literally) at midday with a stellar line-up of local talents. There will be Burgers of Beef, Xave Brown and The Band, Mo Wilson and The Drivers, Boom! Bap! Pow! and, headlining it all, our very own Nat Repepi (if you simply love Ms Repepi like we do, then you’ll love her CD reviews online and on our music page). The best thing about this mammoth tribute to local music? It’s free I tell you, free!

Here’s an event where the lines between who is doing what are blurred… literally. So, Spank Productions have joined forces with Connections nightclub to present a monthly party night called Shameless. The first party off the rank is Detention, and as the name suggests it’s a night of naughty school antics. Dress up for extra points. Stuck for what to wear? Think athletic jocks, school bitches, short skirt skanks, mullet induced bogans, long fringed emos, sexy nerds, sadistic school principals and horny headmistresses. There are prizes for best costumes, with awards decreed at midnight. Music wise shake your thang to vocal house, electro, dance and incredibly dirty disco. This school yard shebang explodes at Connections on Saturday May 9 with doors opening super early from 8pm. Expect plenty of bad behaviour!

The Genderfuck Ball kicks off on Friday May 15 from 8pm at The Brass Monkey. It’s a chance for boys to be girls and girls to be boys with all the money helping fund the Cross Campus Queer Network. Dress up and get ready to get your groove on because this evening promises to be completely riotous.

Soho Nights happens every Tuesday night at the hottest little jazz club in town, The Ellington. It’s a place where music, art and human experience intersect, all embellished with love. There’s live music and plenty of open minds. With a range of experiences happening each week, it’s well worth checking their website for their full – and incredibly comprehensive – schedule. Coming up in May you can expect Ali Bodycoat and Joe Chindamo plus others. Go to www.ellingtonjazz.com.au for more information.

ZOO are celebrating their first birthday on Sunday May 17. The evening promises to be a massive event but don’t take my word for it… read the wonderful little article that appears on the opposite page for a full rundown on the evening!

SEXY is something completely off the beaten track. It happens at the Republic every Saturday night from midnight and features DJ Teen Wolf, Jak Attack and The Amazing Petro and His Shiny Discs of Harem Magic. Well worth checking out.

Sometimes the gay scene can be a heady mix of heaven and hell. The hot lookers. The knob faces. The awesome shows. The kids with too many opinions who just have to tell everyone about it (like we care!). The great bodies. The bad attitudes. Well, for one night and one night only The Hotel is casting all this aside and delving into the core of what Heaven & Hell really mean, which is simply: they mean PARTYTIME! Whoo! Be there Sunday May 31 when outside transforms into a white fluffy cloud filled with angels offering massages, heavenly food and angelic drag shows… which seems a complete oxymoron. Inside it’ll be Hell. Expect near naked entertainment, sword swallowers, devils and food so hot and spicy it’ll bring a tear to your eye. Tickets all night long. Doors open at 6pm. Be damned. Be saved. Just be there.

Big news this month is the fact that Rozalla will be appearing at Connections as a fundraiser for Pride WA. In what is being touted as the first of many, the evening promises to be spectacularly huge and literally packed to the rafters as the appearance takes place on Sunday May 31. For those who don’t know… that’s Foundation Day Long weekend. That means you can get munted since the next day is a public holiday. And if you need further enlightening, Rozalla is the voice responsible for that huge anthem Everybody’s Free. Rozalla’s career spans the better part of two decades and is literally legendary in nature. The promises to be so big that it’ll rock your socks off, literally, so get down to Connections and get the party started.

In the meantime get out there and be little terrors.

Big love,

mOther
