Sex offender Stewart Gorham to be kept in prison beyond the end of his sentence

One of Western Australia’s most dangerous criminals will be kept behind bars indefinitely even though he completed his sentence four years ago.

Stewart Sinclair Gorham was sent to prison for 14 years in 2006 after he was found guilty of raping a 12-year-old boy at knife point in Willagee. At the time Gorham had only been out of prison for four weeks.

The same year he had an additional four years added to his sentence after he was found guilty of raping another prisoner who was on remand.

Gorham has told authorities that if he was released he planned to commit further rapes and murder at the first opportunity. In 2022 he was placed on a continuing indefinite detention order after it was found his release would pose a high likelihood of danger to the community.

This week a review of his case reaffirmed the decision to keep him behind bars. The news was reported the The West Australian. Gorham is housed at Casurina Prison’s Special Handling Unit – and he he has expressed a desire to be held there until his death.

Forensic psychiatrist Dr Gosia Wojnarowska, who diagnosed Gorham with sexual sadism disorder, told the court that the prisoner remained a danger to the community. She explained the he had described his desire to rape and murder more men if ever released.

Gorham is now in his late 50’s, he has spent most of his adult life behind bars charged with sex crimes.
