Sportsbet withdraws betting on the marriage postal survey

Just hours after their spokesperson was urging Australians to embrace the novelty of betting on the outcome of the marriage postal survey, Sportsbet have withdraw their campaign.

“Sportsbet respects that same-sex marriage is an important social issue,” the company said in a statement.

“In response to recent views received regarding Sportsbet’s same-sex marriage markets, we have decided to withdraw the markets.”

Alex Greenwich, co-chair of Australian Marriage Equality had described the company’s promotion as a “whole new low”.

“To vote on the validity of some Australians’ relationships is bad enough, but to bet on them is a whole new low,” Greenwich said on Wednesday.
