The A List

May heralds an array of auditory treats. On Friday May 9 and Saturday May 10, be seduced by WASO and the passionate tangos of Argentinean master Astor Piazollo conducted by the equally beguiling and dynamic Kristian Järvi. Järvi conducts a program of exciting virtuosic showpieces for large orchestra, including the rarely performed Night of the Mayas.

Down to Fremantle and over to Kulcha, which is splitting at the seams with May events, including a bohemian bit of fun with distinguished violinist Ernie Gruner and accordionist/singer Phil Carroll on Friday May 2 at 8pm. The duo will present a night of traditional klezmer and Middle Eastern music using mandolin, ney and duduk to raise funds for the Young String Player’s Foundation.

For something snazzier and jazzier, don’t miss Jazz Windows – The Pen is mightier than the Sword at WAAPA, May 28, 7.30pm. This is a finely crafted journey of thought provoking jazz at its best.

Support a good cause at The Concert Hall when it plays host to End Child Slavery – Global Night Shift Concert on Friday May 16. Currently, over 8.4 million children are denied an education and inducted into a life of slavery, and this evening of bands and inspirational speakers will unite young Australians in taking a stand against child slavery.

If you haven’t already bought tickets for Sir Elton’s Perth concert at Members Equity Stadium on Saturday 10th May, well, you’ll probably be left sitting at home in your pink chiffon and watching an old concert DVD. Let that be a lesson and get tickets now for some of June’s highlights, such as the Soweto Gospel Chior (June 17 to 19).
