Where to begin, where to begin? April brings internationally renowned guests to WASO and UWA’s Keyed Up, while Kulcha keeps bringing the world to Perth’s doorstep and cabaret continues at Downstairs at the Maj
Bach fans, alas, WASO’s April 4th performance, The Bach Project at St George’s Cathedral has sold out. Let that be a lesson for later in the month and get tickets now for Paul Daniel Conducts the Symphony, April 18-19 at Perth Concert Hall; Elgar’s Cello Concerto, April 24 and 26 at Perth Concert Hall; and – wait for it – An Evening with Neil Sedaka (of ‘Breaking Up Is Hard to Do’ fame) on May 2-3 at Riverside Theatre.
In other classical offerings, UWA Keyed Up presents Sydney-born pianist Suzanna Hlinka May 3 at Octagon Theatre, where she will take the audience on a ‘Romantic Escape’ with the likes of Haydn, Liszt and Rachmaninoff.
The Maj also has a full line-up of entertainment, with Lunchtime Concerts every Thursday in April. Pack a little culture into your lunch hour with Electrickoraland (April 3), Wonderful With Wine (April 10), John Bannister & The Charisma Brothers (April 17), Ochre (April 24). Shows run from 12.30-1.10pm and are only $9!
Meanwhile, Downstairs at the Maj, the fun continues with Cabaret Soiree. Even though ‘The Fat Lady Sings’ April 3-5, it ain’t over because ‘Chicks & Flicks’ follows April 10-12 and Boris and Costia Alive in Las Vegas close the season April 17-19.
Kulcha also has a jam-packed month of cosmopolitan musical offerings. OiP’s favourite of the bunch is Voler La Nuit (Fly by Night) with Parisien-born Pascale at Kulcha in Fremantle. For more events, see www.kulcha.com.au.
Looking ahead, Soweto Gospel Choir’s ‘African Spirit’ tour stops in Perth, Mandurah and Bunbury in early June. Tickets are on sale now – www.soweto gospelchoir.com. And looking far, far ahead, tickets have gone on sale for Andre Rieu’s November 22 show at Subiaco Oval – www.ticketmaster.com.au.
Until next month, adieu…
