Troye Sivan has been teasing new track “Party” across his social media channels, with its refrain of “Party in the park. Party in the bush. Party under the bridge. Party at the restaurant. Party at the club. Party in the day. Party at my house.”

Now that the full track and video have arrived, there’s plenty to unpack. The clip features a setting reminiscent of Game of Thrones. Sir Ian McKellen lends his voice, while a prominent sample from Madonna’s 2000 hit “Music” has already prompted speculation about a future collaboration. The choreography recalls earlier Sivan videos, there are several intimate moments, and the whole production looks like one hell of a party.

The bold video was directed by Gordon von Steiner, who also helmed the video for recent release “She’s the Best”, which featured a guest appearance from Nicole Kidman.

This time around, Sivan assembled a large group of collaborators to create the song. Luka Kloser, Elvira Anderfjärd, Tove Burman, Leland, Tyde Levi, Rob Feher and Styalz Fuego all contributed to the track. The sample comes from Madonna’s 2000 hit “Music”, which she wrote alongside French producer Mirwais Ahmadzaï.

The collaboration also marks the first official release between Sivan and his brother, Tyde. Tyde has previously supported Sivan on tour, but this is the first time they have officially released music together.

“We’ve always made music in the same house. We’ve lived together for almost our whole lives,” Sivan said. “We’ve always naturally passed music back and forth.”

The track marks the first time that shared musical world has officially made its way into Sivan’s catalogue.

The accompanying video, directed by Sivan’s longtime collaborator Gordon von Steiner, is a grand period piece filmed at a castle in Berkeley, England, transporting viewers into a world of opulence, revelry and uninhibited celebration.

Beneath the spectacle lies a deeper idea: partying as something almost sacred, particularly within queer culture.

“When Gordon von Steiner and I were talking about the video and the song, we kept coming back to the idea that partying is actually quite sacred, especially for queer people. Nightlife is often the first place a queer person finds themselves in a room where they’re not the minority, so it becomes a really formative and liberating space for so many of us. And if letting loose is innate to humanity, which I believe it is, then surely people have always partied. We wanted to know what that looked like. So we went back in time and threw one,” Sivan said.

The project also reunites Troye Sivan and Sir Ian McKellen, who first worked together when Sivan was 14, almost 15, in a production of Waiting for Godot in Perth.

For Sivan, McKellen’s appearance carries deep personal significance. At the time they worked together, Sivan was on the cusp of coming out to his mother, and seeing an openly gay man who was free, proud and successful left a lasting impression.

Decades later, inviting McKellen to lend his voice to “Party” became a meaningful connection between two generations and a fitting expression of the queer lineage at the heart of the film.
