The tradie featured in the latest TV campaign for the Coalition for Marriage has shared his concern that people might think he’s gay if he wears a rainbow coloured guitar strap.
Steve Petersen, 54, appeared in the TV commercial saying that he’s opposed to marriage equality and worried about political correctness. In the TV spot Petersen says he has a concern about the lack of detail about potential consequences should same sex couples be allowed to wed.
Petersen, a former school teacher and part time musician, told The Daily Mail that while he’s a supporter of the no campaign, the comments he makes in the video were scripted.
Speaking to The Daily Mail Petersen listed the reasons he’s opposed to allowing same sex couples to wed. His concerns include a worry that wearing a rainbow patterned guitar strap may lead to some people to think that he is gay.
The part-time musician has complained that the word “gay” to no longer has the meaning “carefree and nonchalant and generally a cheerful person.” and as such, he has been restricted from using it in conversations.
Petersen is also shared his concerned that a rainbow guitar strap that he used in his band can no longer be worn anymore; “Can’t use any more” … “somebody asked me the other day if I was gay” Petersen said.
He’s not alone in his concern about the word gay, Queensland politician Bob Katter has also proclaimed that the LGBTIQ community has stolen his favourite word.
Katter told Sky News that the gay community had stolen the three letter word and left others searching for alternatives to use.
