WA Ballet Announces 2015 Season

WA Ballet2The West Australian Ballet announced an exciting program for 2015 featuring a mix of traditional and contemporary works.

The 2015 program has the theme of ‘We’ll Move You’ as the ballet takes on many challenges as they present work from respected choreographers including William Forsythe and the late George Balanchine, Australian premieres of works by Belgium’s Annabelle Lopez Ochoa and brand new works from the company’s own Daniel Roberts.

For lovers of more traditional ballet there will be a new version of the classic ‘Coppelia’. Australian choreographer Greg Horsman will deliver a new take of the classic tale of the doll who comes to life in a co-production with the Queensland Ballet.

The company will also remount Jane Smeulder’s version of ‘Cinderella’.

The annual trip to the Quarry Amphitheatre will be titled ‘Zip, Zap, Zoom’, its lead piece choreographed by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa. The piece features music from a diverse range of artists including MC Solaar and Dr Dre.

It’l be one of two pieces by the Belgian choreographer on the program. Alongside it will be William Forsythe’s ‘Steptext’ which features a soundtrack from Bach.

The WA Ballet’s own soloist Daniel Roberts will present his work ‘Hold the Forth’ set to a soundtrack from Max Richter.

In May the company will take up residence at His Majesty’s Theatre to present ‘Embraceable You’, a celebration of the work of George Balanchine. Three of Balanchine’s works will be performed alongside ‘Tarantella’, a piece choreographed by Jane Smeulder’s that is inspired by Balanchine’s work.

Mid-year will see the staging of ‘Genesis’ which features new work from the company’s choreographers.

The new program was launched last night at His Majesty’s Theatre with Artistic Director Aurelien Scannella sharing his enthusiasm for the year ahead.
